SOUTHERN GUILD ARTIST PROFILE: CHIDY WAYNE
Chidy Wayne is a Spanish-Guinean artist based in Barcelona, working in various media, including painting and sculpture. Wayne’s practice springs from a deep interest in the intuitive and repetitive act of drawing to articulate the essential form of human movement, gesture and expression. His work most often begins with simple charcoal drawings through which he hones his understanding of line and contour.
Born in Castellón in 1981, Wayne has created a personal code of signs and motifs of great symbolic significance and his drawings, the result of long philosophical reflection, are created using quick, bold strokes. He eschews the superfluous to invite a deeper dialogue with his audience as he explores universal themes such as internal conflict, self-awareness, human resilience and frailty.
Wayne has taken part in multiple solo and group exhibitions in the US and Europe. His most recent solos include Echoes of the Self at Grége Gallery in Brugge, Belgium; Chidy Wayne at The Oilbird, Los Angeles; and a presentation with Adeyemi Ajao in San Francisco, all in 2024.
