Thebe Magugu: Dior teams up with young South African designer for a capsule collection for a good cause
Thebe Magugu’s star continues to rise as Dior teams up with the young South African designer, for an exclusive capsule collection in support of fellow South African and Oscar winner Charlize Theron’s Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP).
According to LVMH, the collaboration – initiated by Maria Grazia Chiuri, the Creative Director for Dior Women – showcases a new generation of fashion designers who conceive and make their creations in South Africa, the native country of longtime Dior ambassador Charlize Theron.
“This collaboration showcases a new generation of fashion designers who conceive and make their creations in South Africa, the native country of longtime Dior ambassador Charlize Theron… [Chiuri] wanted to deepen support for CTAOP, a foundation created in 2007 to aid youth in Southern Africa, both financially – a donation has been made on behalf of Dior – and artistically,” the LVMH statement.
In 2019, Thebe received the LVMH Prize, becoming the first African to be honoured with the coveted and respected accolade.
LVMH says of the 28-year-old South African designer: “[Thebe] continues to celebrate powerful women in his creations. His clothes, he says: ‘are a constant ode to the powerful and independent matriarchs who raised me.’ The designer’s storytelling approach is inspired by a cross-fertilization of the various disciplines he studied, spanning fashion design, photography and media.”
This limited-edition capsule collection was released on October 27.
