‘The Garden of Sisterhood’: Vlisco’s collab with Fally Ipupa for latest campaign, hitting the right notes

Last month, Vlisco, the iconic Dutch textile brand with over a century of influence in African fashion, dropped its latest campaign, The Garden of Sisterhood – and ICYMI, here is a glimpse:

The campaign is inspired by the song Mayanga, and the beauty that emerges when women come together – each one unique, yet bound by an unspoken connection. This collection brings to life intricate floral motifs and soft color palettes that celebrate the strength and individuality that blossoms through community, the brand announced in a statement.

The song Mayanga, produced in collaboration with Congolese superstar Fally Ipupa, is “an extension of the brand’s ongoing celebration of fashion, creativity and cultural storytelling,” the statement added.

A voice that transcends borders, Fally Ipupa brought his signature combination of soulful rumba and contemporary sound to the song, and by extension to the campaign that embodies a Vlisco woman.

The collaboration further taps the talents of renowned Ivorian fashion designer Loza Maléombho and Nigerian director and multidisciplinary artist Daniel Obasi. Bringing together Maléombho’s generation-spanning silhouettes, Obasi’s striking storytelling and Ipupa’s musical artistry, every element of the music video represents the essence of Vlisco’s “The Garden of Sisterhood.”

Says Fally: “Collaborating with Vlisco has been a beautiful experience. They understood my vision of working with talented artists and honouring the beautiful women who wear Vlisco fabrics. By creating exclusive designs for me and for the remarkable women in the cast, Vlisco really brought our artistic vision to life, harmoniously fusing music and fashion.”

“It’s been an honor to collaborate with Fally Ipupa and the creative team behind the ‘Garden of Sisterhood’ campaign. His song Mayanga perfectly reflects our admiration for the women who shaped us, inspire us, and mean so much to us. For us, it’s not just about fashion; it’s about the stories told through our beautiful prints. And I believe the best stories are always told together,” adds Marlou van Engelen, Vlisco’s Creative Director

Filmed in Ivory Coast, Mayanga truly unites music and fashion in a poetic tribute of self-expression, cultural pride, unity and the celebration of amazing women.

Founded in 1846 in the Netherlands, Vlisco has been designing and manufacturing unique printed fabrics, made with time-honored methods and quality materials originally derived from Indonesian wax-based batik. Vlisco’s heritage and design signature is a multicultural symbiosis of beauty and craftsmanship, where each print has its own distinctive identity. For almost 200 years, Vlisco has created over 350,000 original and one-of-a-kind textile designs and color variances. Many of these designs have become cultural treasures, adopted and embraced by African women, and honored with names and meanings by the wholesale partners in West and Central Africa.
